Door Usage Guidelines
Use Door Worx guidelines for door preparation, staining, painting, care, and related finishing information. These recommendations are intended to help protect product performance and support proper handling across interior and exterior door applications.
These guidelines are useful for distributors, retailers, contractors, installers, and others responsible for finishing or handling Door Worx products.
Following these guidelines helps support proper product performance and warranty compliance.
Preparation
1. Remove the door from the frame and lay it flat before finishing whenever possible. This helps support more even application and better overall results.
2. Lightly sand the full surface of the door using #180 grit sandpaper for heavy veneers. Always sand in the direction of the grain.
3. Remove all dust before applying stain, paint, or other finishes. A tack cloth is recommended. Follow the tack cloth manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
4. Do not use compressed air to remove dust. Moisture in compressed air can cause spotting and may affect the final finish.
Staining
Use a recommended oil-based prestain or wood conditioner before staining.
1. Apply an oil-based semitransparent stain or a clear undercoat that is suitable for the intended interior or exterior application.
2. Apply three coats of clear top coat varnish or polyurethane, lightly sanding between coats. Exterior finishes must include ultraviolet (UV) inhibitors.
3. For glazed doors, allow the top coat to lap onto the glass to help protect against moisture intrusion.
Painting
Do not use water-based primer or paint on doors that require oil-based finishes. Water-based finishes may void applicable warranties. Use an exterior-grade paint on all exterior doors. Water-based or latex paint may be used on primed doors where appropriate.
1. Select a high-quality oil-based pigmented primer. Water-based finishes may raise the grain.
2. Apply finish evenly across all surfaces. Be sure to seal the top and bottom of the door as well as all sides.
3. Apply a minimum of two top coats, sanding lightly between coats. For glazed doors, allow the top coat to lap onto the glass by approximately 1/16 inch to help protect against moisture.
4. Do not use black or dark-colored top coats on doors exposed to prolonged direct sunlight. Extended exposure may affect performance.
